J.D. Barnes Limited will be opening an office in the City of Barrie at 565 Bryne Drive effective January 5, 2004. This office will be managed by Al Roccaforte who will oversee all legal surveying services being provided by the firm in Simcoe Region.

There has been considerable activity in Simcoe Region this year and demographic projections for the City of Barrie show above average growth rates over the next few years. J.D. Barnes Limited plans on having a strong presence in the area by opening an office in the City of Barrie to service the needs of our existing clients and to pursue new projects planned for this region.

J.D. BARNES LIMITED BUILDS GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS) BASE NETWORK IN GREATER TORONTO AND OTTAWA AREAS

J.D. Barnes Limited has installed and is now successfully operating GPS base stations from three offices in the Greater Toronto area and one in the Ottawa area. These base stations consist of a GPS unit with an antenna mounted on the office roofs which receive signals from orbiting satellites, compute corrections, and broadcast them through a central web site at www.GPSbase.net. Real Time corrections can then be accessed with a CDMA 1x cellular modem from a remote GPS receiver that allows users to achieve centimetre level positioning accuracy.

RTK technology has been with us for several years now but the limited range of the radios used for communicating between units and the risk of an unattended receiver being stolen or damaged has made this technology inefficient and not cost effective. www.GPSbase.net allows the user to operate one GPS unit instead of two on site to achieve centimetre precision and has a wider range than ever before. The cellular link is very robust over the 1X network and improvements in the cell hardware have allowed the roving GPS unit to be very portable and easy to operate.

J.D. Barnes Limited has been working closely with Leica Geosystems and Telus Mobility in creating this network of GPS base stations. In house software development and months of rigorous testing on-site using various technologies under different conditions have proven this system is ready for commercial use. J.D. Barnes Limited is pleased to announce the purchase of the practice of Peter de Haan Limited in the City of Thunder Bay effective January 15, 2003. Peter de Haan Limited offers professional land surveying services to the public, lawyers, developers, builders, utilities and government clients in the Thunder Bay region. Peter de Haan, O.L.S. will be employed in our Thunder Bay office and Ralph Bode will oversee the transition and be responsible for this expanded operation.

J.D. BARNES LIMITED TRANSFERS MAPPING AND GIS ASSETS TO ITS SUBSIDIARY, FIRST BASE SOLUTIONS INC.

Effective September 30, 2002, J.D. Barnes Limited has implemented a corporate reorganization pursuant to which the mapping and GIS divisions of the company have been transferred to First Base Solutions Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of J.D. Barnes Limited. The management and staff as well as the address of the mapping and GIS divisions remain unchanged. The creation of the subsidiary First Base Solutions Inc. will not affect the services we provide to our clients. We see this corporate reorganization as a positive move towards developing the mapping and GIS services that we have to offer.

J.D. Barnes Limited is an employee owned company providing surveying, mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) services from six office locations in Ontario. Our head office in Markham contains the mapping and GIS divisions consisting of approximately 60 employees of the 215 staff at the firm. Marcel E. Renaud Surveying offers professional land surveying services to the public, lawyers, developers, builders, and government clients in the Ottawa region. Marcel Renaud will remain with the firm as a consultant and Joseph Young, General Manager of Engineering and Geodetic Surveys will oversee the transition and be responsible for this operation.
