Gary Burns Kirstine

Gary Kirstine was born in Toronto on December 4, 1946. He attended high school at Burnhamthorpe College and then completed his BASc at the University of Toronto in 1969 in Civil Engineering, Survey Option.

Gary worked from 1969 – 1971 with the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto, Roads and Traffic Department, in the position of Surveyor. He worked in the field on geodetic control, cadastral and engineering survey projects

He was commissioned in 1971 as an Ontario Land Surveyor and obtained an OLS position in the Roads and Traffic Department at Metro. This position involved the supervision and direction of field survey crews in the performance of cadastral and control surveys.

From 1972– 1974, Gary worked in the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto Management Information Systems Department, Survey Systems Section as Applications Supervisor.  Responsibilities included the application and development of a large computer system in the areas of road and subway design, geodetic, cadastral & engineering surveys as well project cost control.

From 1975 -1976 he served as the Mapping Administrator in the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto, Central Mapping Division.  This division coordinated and exercised quality control over the control surveying and mapping programs in Metro and sets standards and specifications for these programs

On January 5, 1976,  Gary joined J.D. Barnes Limited as the General Manager of Proconsul Limited. He was responsible for the operation of the mapping, Geoprocessing, Research and Development and Land Information Services Divisions. He became Vice President of Operations in 1985.

Gary left JDB in 1991 to take the position of President of Landata International Services Inc, a position he held until 1993. LIS was responsible for the title records conversion on the POLARIS project.

Gary was rehired as President of J.D. Barnes Limited on October 17, 1994 and remained in that position until March of 2000 when he relinquished this position. He remained with JDB on a part-time basis until September 2007 when he retired as an employee. He currently serves on the Board of Directors and works for JDB on a contract as-needed basis.

Gary is married to Ellen Kirstine and lives in Coldwater Ontario. He has two sons, Sebastian who is now living in Calgary Alberta, and Travis who works for First Base Solutions Inc in the web sales division.
